Women's Studies Research Centers of Universities Gather at CoHE




The meeting "Women's Studies Research Centers" took place with the participation of 182 people from 81 cities including officials from the Directorate General on the Status of Women of the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, directors of the women's research centers of universities, academics studying on women's research and a group of undergraduate students at the Council of Higher Education.






Gülser Ustaoğlu, General Director of the Directorate General on the Status of Women of the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, Prof. Funda Sivrikaya, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Bilgi University, and Prof. Gülriz Uygur, academic at the Faculty of Law of Ankara University, made their speeches in the first session of the meeting. In the second session, Prof. Şevkat Bahar Özvarış, Director of Hacettepe University Women's Research and Implementation Center (HUKSAM), and Assoc. Prof. Özlem Belkıs, Dokuz Eylül University Women's Studies Research Center (DEKAUM), made presentations on the examples of good implementations.




CoHE Deputy President Prof. Safa Kapıcıoğlu started his opening speech by mentioning the activities conducted by the "Unit of Women's Studies in Academia" of CoHE. Kapıcıoğlu expressed CoHE's expectations from the women's studies research centers of universities and emphasized how CoHE and President Saraç place importance on the leadership of women and women's rights in academia. He noted that the centers should carry out studies with the related institutions and civil society especially in the cities where they are located at and that young academics are expected to carry out studies in these fields and especially in the field related to education problems of refugees by receiving project funds.




Gülser Ustaoğlu, , General Director of the Directorate General on the Status of Women of the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, touched on the importance of the meeting and talked about the studies done with laws enacted in the last 10 years. Ustaoğlu explained the studies on violence against women, sexual abuse, women's shelters and refugees in detail. In addition, she emphasized that the educators trained by the Ministry had been training thousands of people at the Turkish Armed Forces and Religious Affairs Administration on these topics every year.




Prof. Sezer Ş. Komsuoğlu, Head of the Unit of Women's Studies in Academia of CoHE, made a presentation on the place of women in academia in both Turkey and the world and shared the statistics related to this topic with the audience.




Following the opening speeches, Prof. Funda Sivrikaya, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of Bilgi University, made a presentation entitled "CoHE Commission Studies in Academia" and Prof. Gülriz Uygur, academic at the Faculty of Law of Ankara University, made a presentation entitled "Position Document and Expectations from Universities".



In the second session, examples of good implementations from Women's Studies Research Centers were presented.




Prof. Şevkat Bahat Özvarış from Hacettepe University and Assoc. Prof. Özlem Belkıs from Dokuz Eylül University presented their projects.






Prof. Serpil Sancar, the previous dean of the Faculty of Political Science and one of the first academics that conducted the studies on women in Turkey, told her experiences on this topic to the directors of the centers.



After the speeches, participants made contributions and suggestions for an hour.



The meeting was concluded with the presentation of the posters in the foyer area.
